Attack the Block

Just got back from seeing “Attack the Block”! I love a good sci-fi horror flick, especially when it’s something different. To set the scene without too many spoilers, we encounter our main characters in the act of a mugging – a young nurse, Sam, is accosted by a group of teenage thugs while she’s walking home late at night. In the midst of this, something blasts down from the sky, smashing a car and interrupting them long enough for Sam to escape. The boys investigate and discover a monkey-like creature, and when it attacks their leader, Moses, they hunt it down. And so the invasion begins, and more and more creatures begin to hurtle down from the sky like the meteors. Sam and her teenage assailants end up having to work together to defend themselves and their home, a housing project in South London, from a terrifying alien invasion.

I enjoyed the fact that the heroes in this movie weren’t really heroes. I did find them to be sympathetic, because even if they weren’t necessarily good people, they were represented as real people. The kids were forced to face and take responsibility for the things they did, both mugging Sam and killing the first alien that arrived. It was as much a coming of story as it was a sci-fi horror. And I like movies and stories with unconventional, anti-heroes. I’m seeing it billed as a comedy, and it did have a few good laughs, but unless there was a lot going over my head because I’m not British (or unless a straightforward British horror is not allowed to have any comedy in it what-so-ever?) I wouldn’t go to see it expecting a comedy, even a dark one. Most of the jokes are in the trailer.  But also don’t go expecting a movie that takes itself too seriously. It’s not a movie to be over-analyzed. It was a fun, tense horror movie, with a lot of jumpy scares and action, just enough gore to make you squirm, and a great soundtrack by Basement Jaxx.

I also have to mention the fantastic minimalist poster design above. I haven’t been able to track down the name of the artist who designed it, but I will add that info when I find it.

Puppeteer

Here is the final version of what I’m still calling, for lack of a better title, Puppeteer. I’m really happy with how this piece came out, especially since it sat and collected dust for so long! Usually once a drawing has lain dormant for over a year, that’s it. No hope of resurrection! Thankfully this one had some life left in it. I ventured into a new coloring style for this one. For a while now I’ve been feeling like I’d outgrown my cel shading style, even though I still really like the look of the style. This combines my cel shading technique with some loose painterly brushwork, and I think it worked well. I still want to have strong lines in my work, so I’m not looking to go completely painterly or completely realistic, but I want something that looks like it has more of my hand in it than the cel shading does.

And almost immediately after finishing this painting I started drawing another piece set in the same world. It features a different character and a closer view of one of the live dragons. Apparently they are semi-aquatic? I’ve finished up a pencil sketch and a color rough, and further progress is waiting until I have some extra time off work!

Illustration Friday: Safari

I haven’t done an Illustration Friday in awhile, but I remembered to look at the topic for this past week…and by Thursday I’d come with an idea of what to draw for it. I drew my entry on Friday, so it was actually to late to post. But sometimes inspiration can be hard to come by, so I felt like it would be wrong to just not do this illustration because the arbitrary deadline had passed.

Curiosities

About two years ago I was hired by a local small press (who shall remain unnamed, and likely you haven’t heard of them) to create some illustrations for a website they intended to design. Long story short, the client disappeared without a trace before the project was ever finished, I only got 1/4 of the payment, and the art that was completed never got used for anything. And I figure after two years it’s never going to be used for anything. I had practically forgotten it existed. Which is sad, because I think I did a pretty nice job on these!

The theme was a Cabinet of Curiosities with a gritty, steampunk look. Here are the two pieces that were finished (the press’ name has been removed from the banner)

I do want to come up with something to do with these, because I really like them, especially the vertical one with the pipes and spider-y thing.

I also had some free time a few nights ago and I spent it sketching in my neglected Moleskine. I’ve been wanting to draw a pic of Ellie Goulding for a while. She’s also good practice for faces, because her features are so distinctive. I’m not very good at likenesses; it’s something I want to work on.

Puppeteer: Take 2

Last week my old lightbox finally gave up the ghost, so work on the ‘Heralds’ painting has been stalled.

Wait, backtrack. I completely screwed up the background when I started painting ‘Heralds’, so I have to start over and redraw and ink it on a new sheet of watercolor paper. Which I really need a lightbox for. For the past 15 years or so I’ve been relying on a plastic craft store lightbox, but it was good enough and did the job. Its replacement is one of these beauties – an Artograph Lightpad. I was originally going to get a small one, but my lovely friend, author Ann Somerville,  gave me a very kind gift that allowed me to invest in the 12×17″ model. No more creasing my watercolor paper because it hangs over the edge of the lightbox!

While waiting for my new lightbox to arrive I decided to go back and work on my Puppeteer illustration that I started last year (or possily two years ago?) and never got anywhere with. I got as far as figuring out the composition and finishing the sketch and doing the color mockup. Now I’m waiting to ink it so I can it.
But here’s the current progress, because I’m really enjoying the colors:

I unfortunately haven’t had any new finished work to post lately – a lot has been going on and I’ve been busy with filing taxes, graphic design work, and now that the weather’s better trying to get outside once in a while and convince my body it’s no longer in hibernation mode!

I have spent a little time on the companion piece to Messengers, which currently has the working title of ‘Heralds’. The inking is complete, and I’m looking forward to having some free time to start painting it!

Heralds, line art in progress by Kiri Moth

The most exciting thing happening this month is that Mechanique: Tales of the Circus Tresaulti, by Genevieve Valentine will be hitting the bookstore shelves! This is my first mass market book cover illustration, and I’m beyond thrilled to see it out in the world. Beyond that this is a damn good book, and I hope we’ll be getting more from Ms. Valentine.Mechanique by Genevieve Valentine

P.S. You can get a sneak peek of some of the interior illustrations and read a great review at Tor.com!

Already March! February was incredibly busy, so I didn’t have much time for drawing – but there are a lot of exciting things developing!
Tomorrow, March 1st, my Etsy store will be featured on Heartsy and you will have the opportunity to purchase a gift certificate to my shop at an amazing discount – more than 50% off!

I’m also having a a “Hurry Up Spring” special this week – shipping to all domestic US addresses will be free! So be sure to stop by and get a great deal.

March’s moth is the lovely Baorisa Moth. I am so enamored of the incredible patterns on their wings – I knew as soon as I saw a picture of one of these beauties that I’d have to draw it. The Baorisa moth is found in India and Southeast Asia.

And just like last month, I’ve created a printable March desk calendar and digital wallpaper calendars featuring the Baorisa.

Good friend and brilliant artist Kitsune encouraged me that the too-dark background of the first attempt at painting The Messengers would be great as a texture, and I decided that I wanted to share it! Click on the image above for the zipped PSD, 2508×2738 at 300dpi

The Messengers

In folklore and mythology herons are frequently seen as messengers. They can also symbolize a change in luck.

I painted this piece for my holiday card this card this year, and it was a bit of a change of pace, being all traditional media instead of mostly digital. I bought a set of Dr. Ph. Martin’s Bombay india inks earlier this year, and I’d been looking for an opportunity to do a complete painting with them. They’re very similar to working with watercolors.

Click through below if you’d like to see sketches and in progress work on this painting!
